My Aberdeen Monday...

Throughout the summer in Scotland,
Highland games offer an entertaining mix of culture...
 social...
and sport...
where heavy objects are flung through the air...
to the ooohs and aaahs of the crowd.

Our previous Highland Games experience being the Tomintoul games two summers ago,
we had some idea of what events to expect,
but did not have the crowds of The Braemar Gathering;
the exclamation mark at the end of the Highland Games calendar.

On a whim, we bought a pair of tickets from someone who had moved away,
and off we went...
following cars into the parking field,
walking along with other excited attendees...
waving to campers in the caravan park...
VW Campervan Tent can be yours...
across the River Dee,
and into the picturesque village of Braemar...
where we made our way through the crowds...
and into the games.

High security was further proof that these games were different from other Highland games.
Since 1848, when Queen Victoria first attended,
royal family members have visited regularly...
and this year was no exception.
As the crowd rose to welcome HRH Queen Elizabeth,
Ren Man and I had another opportunity to practice the national anthem, "God Save the Queen",
only this time I was not confused.

She seemed to enjoy the games and after receiving a heather posey from the cutest twelve year old triplets,
Fergus, Fraser and Angus,
made trophy presentations and then took her exit.

Our ringside seats came in handy when...
she smiled and waved at Ren Man...
with nothing between us except six feet of air and her bulletproof Bentley.
I so wanted to curtsy but could NOT put down my camera.
Another lifetime memory in the making.

Happy Monday.
